It has been reported that Grace Mugabe, wife of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, has once again drawn public ire with her comments, this time using the microphone to have the audacity to blame women and their attire for reasons to be raped!
Silke Endress Editor-In-Chief CeCe Cole has taken issue with this summation. While giving the first lady the utmost respect, Silke Endress position is that the first lady is in denial of a very serious issue. “Rape is not indicative of one’s dress; the reality is that men will make a decision to rape a woman even if they had on a turtle neck, baggy jeans, and head wrap,” said CeCe Cole. “Violence against women has not been restricted to a certain dress attire, women’s hairstyle, makeup, culture, religion or country; it is a vicious act of violence against women period, within every society and this discrimination must stop.”
“If you walk around wearing miniskirts displaying your thighs and inviting men to drool over you, then you want to complain when you have been raped? It’s unfortunate because it will be your fault,” the first lady said in Mberengwa at a rally attended by thousands of Zanu PF supporters. “Wear clothes like Mai Mugabe or you can choose trousers, but not those which are too tight. These types of clothes are the signs of moral decadence in our country.”
Our advice for women in Zimbabwe, appeal to President Mugabe, who got it right proclaiming to castrate rapists. Violence against women, have a negative impact on their families, villages and add to the continuation of women being impoverished and economically disadvantaged.
