Mayor Gibson had a vision in 1996 of civic
empowerment and political self- determination
for her community.

A sixteen year veteran of Miami-Dade Police
Department and a skilled entrepreneur,

Ms. Gibson organized and successfully led a
dedicated group of her neighbors in creating
the largest predominately African-American
municipality in the state of Florida-Miami
Gardens.

Today, Gibson is Mayor of Miami Gardens, the
third largest city in Miami-Dade County. The
same skills that have helped propel Miami
Gardens from a vision to a vibrant Mecca for
commerce, finance, education, and recreation
she is now offering to the voters of the 17th
Congressional District.
Shirley's skills as a community organizer and officer holder have been recognized
by numerous organizations. Her honors include: American Jewish Congress
Regional Outstanding Service Award (2007); NAACP Miami-Dade Branch
Presidential Visionary Award (2008); St. Thomas University Leader for Life (2006);
Public Official of the Year (2005); Phillip Brutus Diversity Award (2005); The Heart of
Miami Award for Outstanding Leadership and Services (2003); FCAA Black Achiever
of the Year (2005); Miami-Dade League of Cites Leader for Life Award (2006);

Helen Miller Memorial Civic Award (2004); Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Woman of the
Year (2006); Selected as one of six US Mayors to the 24th Jerusalem Conference of
Mayors (2007); Miami Today's Governmental Leader of the Year (2003); Miami/Ft.
Lauderdale Emerging Leadership Award (2003); Concerned African Woman
Sister-to-Sister Award for Excellence (2007) to name only a few.

Shirley presently serves on numerous boards and commissions while serving the
citizens of Miami Gardens. They include:
* Board of Trustees for the Florida Municipal Insurance Trust, Florida leagues of Cities, Inc.
* Miami-Dade County Charter Review Task Force
* President for Miami-Dade League of Cities
* Board of Trustees of the Aventura Hospital and Medical Center
* Board Member and former chair, of the Center for Family and Child Enrichment, Inc.
* Member of Florida Mayors
* Member of the Florida Black Caucus of Local elected Officials (FBC-Leo);
* Committee member, Citizens Oversight Committee- Miami Dade County Public Schools
* Board of Trustees for the Metropolitan Center at Florida International University
* Member of the Florida Center for Theological Studies
Before her election as Mayor of Miami Gardens, Shirley served on the Miami Dade
County Community Council Three for two terms and the Miami Dade Democratic
Party Executive Committee.

Shirley Gibson graduated from North-Dade Junior High School in the early 60's. An
alumni of St Thomas University, she earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Criminal
Justice, a Master of arts (M.A.) in Pastoral Ministry and an honorary Ph.D. in Scared
Theology. She has earned numerous certificates of Completion for training,
workshops, and seminars.
