was born thousands of miles away in Karachi, Pakistan and was the second of four girls. Timid and shy as a little girl, I turned out to be quite an adventurous spirit and was popularly known as the 'tomboy" of the family. I went to an all girls Zoroastrian School, where the focus was on discipline, education and order. Being a perfectionist, I had to be a good role model so I focused on my grades at school and let the fun be out of school. |
We grew up around our family, bursting with attention from aunts, uncles and cousins. Weekends were my most favorite time, as all of us got together at my uncle and aunt's house where my grandmother lived as well. From telling each other horror stories, to baking cakes in the middle of the night, time flew by. In a British system of education, college can start sooner than it does in the US and before I knew it, I was a liberal arts student at St. Joseph's college for women, and soon after college, started teaching while deciding what to do with life. With my father's encouragement and a spirit of adventure, I came to the US in 1985, not for a vacation this time, but to begin a new chapter of adult life. I trained in many areas of office management and a few years later got promoted enough to work directly with the President of the company as the VP of HR. Working for this prominent and successful real estate establishment on 5th avenue, I matured and learned to be independent and self-sufficient. What I had not realized then was that taking on this position also meant I was learning to become a hard core Republican. I helped my boss raise money for the Republican Party during the Reagan administration. He was a member of the Eagles Republican Party, and I was actively working in many ways to support his participation. During Bush Senior's administration, when he became a member of the Chairman's advisory Board for the Republican Party in 1991, I was doing a lot of the legwork to support him. |
We were invited to the White House on several different occasions and worked very close with Senator Goodman who was the Chairman of the Republican Party in New York. When my boss eventually invited me to be a part of his life, he also invited me to become a Republican, and yes (for both) was the only answer he was looking for. I am so glad I agreed (to both propositions) and the rest is history. We moved to Longwood 15 years ago and began life all over again. One of the valuable constants in life was being a part of the Republican family. We got more active once we settled here and life picked up momentum. From raising money, having election watches for several candidates, to organizing fund raisers for John Mica and Tom Feeney, we have enjoyed supporting the party. An exciting moment I distinctly remember from these activities is when we raised $40,000 in 2 hours for Charlie Crist. The only difference between helping Louis in New York and Florida was that in NY I got paid a lot. I am actively involved in our mosques, and our community and support many charity initiatives that include helping the needy, and empowering girls in our community. I am extremely proud that my husband and I have played a role in raising awareness of the importance of participating in politics so diverse views are heard, especially in the Pakistani community. Our sons make life more meaningful and we enjoy playing with our newest addition to our family, my little niece whenever we can. We have so much to be grateful for and hope that we can continue to support the party in any way we can as it is an honor to be in such august company. Sehba Joachim. That's Her Story of Glory! |
