My name is Venus Cummings, I am 38 years old. I moved to Orlando Florida from Puerto Rico in 1989. I have two beautiful daughters and a handsome son whom are my pride and joy. On August 2007 I separated from my husband after 6 years of marriage. Those were some hard and difficult 6 years (my husband is 18 years older than I am). My husband has always tried to control my life. He never accepted my eldest son from my previous marriage, it was a constant battle, and I could not stand it any longer. My husband did not approve of my family or friends and little by little, he isolated me. |
I decided to start college in 2005. That decision became another challenge, my husband did not approve of my studies, obstacles after obstacles, insults after insults about the major I chose to study. My husband would go on and on about the "wrong choice" I supposedly had made. On June 2007 I began working for McCoy Federal Credit Union as a bank teller. Working at the bank became yet another challenge, and more pressure from my husband he did not approve of my job. I continued attending college even though my husband refused for me to accomplish professional growth, my dreams, or any of my personal goals, which one of them was to complete my Bachelor on Criminal Justice. As all this was happening, I was planning to leave this relationship, which was putting me through unimaginable stress, nervous breakdowns and affecting the well-being of my children. One day, I grabbed my two daughters and left. |
"After going through biopsies, sonograms and mammograms, my worst fears were confirmed; the test results came back and revealed stage 1 cancer" |
On March 2008, while watching T.V. and self-examining my breast I noticed an unusual lump on my left breast. I knew right away that the lump was not normal, and I sought medical attention. I scheduled an appointment to see my primary care physician. I was alarmed and panicky; however, leaving matters in God hands I tried to stay positive and calm. While waiting for the test results to come back, I could not help but to be anxious and worried. After going through biopsies, sonograms and mammograms, my worst fears were confirmed; the test results came back and revealed stage-1 cancer. My whole world had come crushing down in front of my eyes and l was helpless to stop it. I was distraught, and could not help but question God, why me? Had I not been through enough? What had I done so bad to deserve this? I knew there was no one in our family with cancer, all the stress from putting up with my husband and the divorce must have cause or contributed to getting the disease. Once I put my self together, and came to my senses I realized that I needed to fight this disease. I had three children who are my life and needed me, which was plenty of reason to battle this disease. It took me three months to get the surgery. I was waiting for one of my sister to come from out of the country to help care for my children and me while I recovered from the surgery. To my surprise and after waiting three months my sister was not coming. By now, my cancer had worsened and was at Stage-2. |
