Barbara Page Burns is the daughter of the late Rev. Edoras Page and Arizona Page. Her brother is Mayor Ernest Page, the first African American Mayor for the City of Orlando. Mrs. Burns was blessed with two wonderful children. Busara Burns Pitts is a principal at Pasadena Fundamental Elementary School in St. Petersburg, Florida. Her daughter Busara is married to Robert Pitts Jr. and they have two daughters, Jelani and Neema. Her son, Bakari Burns is the CEO for the Orange Blossom Health Care Center, in Orlando, Florida and he has a daughter, Addison. |

Mrs. Burns is a native of Orlando, Florida. She is a graduate of Holden Street Elementary School and Jones High School. She received a B.A. Degree in Mathematics from Florida A & M University in 1968. Mrs. Burns has spent 35 years of her life teaching secondary Mathematics. Her first teaching experience was in 1972 at Memorial Junior High School in San Diego. Her next teaching position was in 1976 at Liberty Junior High School in Orlando, Florida. The last 28 years of her teaching career has been at Jones High School. While at Jones High School she has been the Mathematics Department Chairperson for over 18 non-consecutive years. She organized the Math Club and the Trig Hotline. She has been the Senior Class Sponsor and Coronation Director. Her first extracurricular activity job was with James "Chef" Wilson as Assistant Band Director for the Majorettes, Flag Corps, and Color Guards. She did this job for seven years with little or no stipend. |

After retiring from working with band she began to travel with Mrs. Ernestine Embry as a chaperone for the cheerleaders. It was not long before she was Head Cheerleader Coach. This job would take her on a 12-year journey of fundraising, cheerleader camps and bus rides to various athletic activities. Mrs. Burns was nominated as Jones High School Teacher of the Year in 1986 and 1996. She cherishes this honor, which her colleagues bestowed upon her. In 2006 she had the 5th highest learning gains in Mathematics on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) in the State of Florida. She was given the honor of being Grand Marshal for the 2007-2008 Homecoming Parade. This is an honor that is usually bestowed upon heads of states, senators, representatives, and commissioners. |
